Tier System (Levels)
Tiers allow you to segment your members based on their level of loyalty and offer them increasing benefits. It is a powerful tool for motivating customers to spend more and engage with your brand on an ongoing basis.
How Tiers Work
The tier system is a ladder: as a member accumulates more activity, they move up and gain access to better benefits. You can create as many tiers as you wish, although the standard is between 3 and 5.
Typical example:
| Tier | Requirement | Benefit |
|---|---|---|
| Bronze | Registration | Basic points |
| Silver | 500 accumulated points | x1.5 points multiplier |
| Gold | 2,000 accumulated points | x2 multiplier + free shipping |
| Platinum | 5,000 accumulated points | x3 multiplier + VIP access + exclusive rewards |
Create Tiers
- Go to Programs > select your program > Tiers
- Click Create Tier
- Configure the tier details:
- Name: the name visible to members (for example, "Gold")
- Description: a brief description of the tier's benefits
- Icon or image: a representative visual for the tier
- Color: an identifying color (for example, gold for Gold)
- Position: the tier's order on the ladder (1 = lowest)
- Click Save
- Repeat the process for each tier you want to create
Promotion Criteria
Define what a member needs to do to move up a tier:
- Select a tier and go to the Criteria section
- Choose the type of criteria:
- Accumulated points: the member moves up upon reaching a total number of points
- Accumulated spending: based on the total amount of their purchases
- Number of transactions: based on how many purchases they have made
- Points in a period: points accumulated in the last X months
- Set the threshold required to reach the tier (for example, 2,000 points)
- Click Save
Period-based criteria are ideal if you want tiers to reflect recent activity rather than just the total history.
Tier Benefits
For each tier you can define exclusive benefits:
Points Multiplier
- In the tier settings, find Points Multiplier
- Set the multiplication factor (for example, x1.5, x2, x3)
- Points from all of the member's transactions will be automatically multiplied
Exclusive Rewards
- When creating a reward, restrict its availability to certain tiers
- Only members at those tiers will see the reward in their catalog
Other Benefits
You can describe additional benefits in the tier description. These will be displayed in the member portal:
- Free shipping
- Priority access to campaigns
- Special discounts
- Event invitations
Automatic Promotion and Demotion
IncentIA can manage tier changes automatically:
Automatic Promotion
When a member meets the criteria for a higher tier, they are promoted automatically:
- Go to Programs > Tiers > General Settings
- Enable Automatic Promotion
- Choose whether to send a notification to the member when they level up
- Click Save
Automatic Demotion (optional)
If you want members to maintain their activity to keep their tier:
- In General Settings for tiers, enable Automatic Demotion
- Set the evaluation period (for example, every 12 months)
- If the member does not reach the tier threshold during the period, they will drop to the tier below
- Choose whether to send a prior warning before the demotion
Automatic demotion can frustrate some customers. Use this option carefully and make sure to communicate it clearly. An alternative is to send "at risk of demotion" warnings to motivate activity before it happens.
Manual Tier Assignment
In addition to automatic changes, you can change a member's tier manually:
- Go to Members and search for the member
- Click on their profile
- In the Tier section, click Change Tier
- Select the new tier
- Click Save
This is useful for rewarding VIP customers, handling special situations, or managing key relationships directly.
